Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and solar architecture, which can make considerable contributions to solving some of the most urgent problems the world now faces.
India is densely populated and has high solar insolation, an ideal combination for using solar power in India. India is already a leader in wind power generation. In the solar energy sector, some large projects have been proposed, and a 35,000 km2 area of the Thar Desert has been set aside for solar power projects, sufficient to generate 700 GW to 2,100 GW. In July 2009, India unveiled a US$19 billion plan to produce 20 GW of solar power by 2020. Under the plan, the use of solar-powered equipment and applications would be made compulsory in all government buildings, as well as hospitals and hotels. On 18 November 2009, it was reported that India was ready to launch its National Solar Mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, with plans to generate 1,000 MW of power by 2013.
LEPL has successfully bid for a 10 MW Solar Power Project in Rajasthan under the Phase 1 of Batch II of JNNSM(Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission) and is in the process of setting up the grid connected solar power plant of 10 MW capacity. The selected site of 56 acres is located in Bawdi Barsinga village, Tehsil Phalodi District, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The company through its consultants has undertaken site surveys, solar resource assessment studies and developed the power evacuation options.
The project involves the implementation of c-Si technology solar modules. The electricity generated will be fed into a 33 kV (high tension) grid line and hence transmission losses are not anticipated The generated electricity will replace conventional source of power generation contributing to clean and green energy production. The implementation of the project will also lead to additional income and employment in the region.
